Last fall my XP machine quit going online. We were going to Florida for the winter, so I left it. Now I'm trying to get the XP machine online. My laptop and another PC work fine on the wireless side. The XP machine is connected via ethernet and will not access the portal to check the setup. I shut down the PC, the router and the cable modem. Re-started the modem, then the router, then the PC. The PC says it is connected to the router. When you enter http://my.firewall in the browser, it says address not found. I'm hoping I don't have to do a hard reset. Any ideas?

I've seen that number somewhere but can't remember where. Where do I find it?

Two ways in XP that I can recall are:

Command Prompt —
  • 1. Click Start
  • 2. Click Run
  • 3. Type in cmd
  • 4. In the command window type ipconfig /all
  • 5. The results will show your IP address and associated information

Network Connection Icon

  • 1. Right click the network connection icon in the system tray
  • 2. Select Status from the context menu that opens
  • 3. Select the Support tab
  • 4. The IP address is displayed

Therein lies your problem. The IP address that starts with 169.254 is a dummy address Microsoft defaults to if it can't connect. You should have something that looks like 192.168.10.x.

There could be many reasons, but we know that your computer is not seeing the Z100G and vice versa. First thing is to check the cable and make sure you have a solid physical connection. Second, check the port on the PC to see if it has some yellow and/or green lights either solid or flashing. Check to see that the port number you are plugged into on the Z100G has a corresponding lit light on the front of the device.

There are many different routes to take the next step depending on what you discover.

There is a blinking yellow light on the network card and solid green lights on the Z100 on the correct port.

Those are good signs. lets do the command prompt thing again:

  • 1. Click Start
  • 2. Click Run
  • 3. Type in cmd
  • 4. In the command window type IPCONFIG /RELEASE

Then repeat steps 1-4, except change step 4 to the following command:
IPCONFIG /RENEW

Then repeat steps 1-4 again, but change step 4 to the following command:
IPCONFIG /ALL

See if you get a new IP address.

The renew command timed out. Unable to contact DHCP server.

I have been reminded that at the time this went offline, I was in the middle of an update when the power went off. I may need to restore a disk image.

could have damaged your actual motherboard. Do a system restore back to the time it worked.
System Restore

If this doesn't help, there are a couple of things else to check.

Also, your wireless computers ARE getting internet access, correct?

sorry for the late reply. am writing this in between work. my problem is about network connections. i am not a newbie but not a bigtime techie like others.

I have a network of 3 xp desktops and 1 vista (laptop) computers connected to a dlink 802.b router. worked fine. daughter wanted wireless capability and so I got a dlink wbr1310 router. All computers still connect perfectly. So I gave away my old router.
Two weeks ago I tried to connect with my old desktops ( Win Me and 98 which connected w/ no problem to my old dlink router) to the new router. Add an older model HP Xp computer and a desktop running windows 2000 professional. NONE will connect to the internet. The funny thing is that the latter 2 computers did connect with the old laptop.
anyway, like JC i get the default 169 ip address. from other forums I tried ipconfig release and renew. still nothing. do you have any idea what to do? should I buy a new adapter card for my win 98 and me computers? but what happened with the win 2000 and old hp xp computer. am trying to get a 802b router just to go back to the old standards. any help is much appreciated. thanks a lot

Well, the hours long restoration didn't solve the problem. What are the couple other things to try?

bigwawao,

This forum is about support for the Zonealarm Z100G router. Since you have Dlink routers, you probably want to try Dlink tech support at Dlink Support

Try this: Reinstall the NIC card drivers.

in the Run menu type: devmgmt.msc .
Open the Network Adapters Tab.
Right click on the network adapter and Remove it.
When its gone, right click on anything in the window and select Scan for hardware changes .

That should force it to reinstall and reconfigure the Network Interface.

Since you said the power went out during and install, anything could have happened. It's possible the NIC card is damaged. What exact PC model do you have?

Also, when you say restore disk image, are you reinstalling from the factory configurations, or running System Restore process that only takes the system settings back in time?

Big Wawao,

According to the spec sheet at Dlink, the WBR-1310 is only compatible with Win 2000 SP4, XP, Vista, and OS X.

Not sure why, but that's what they claim. Either way, I don't really mess with the old systems so it might be best to hit the Dlink tech support after all.

Good Luck...

Followed your directions and everything went as intended. Rebooted and no luck. Maybe I'm in need of a new NIC.

This is a PC that was built by a local shop. The current NIC is on the system board as is everything else.

The restore was done from a backup created by Acronis True Image.
