Since a couple of weeks I have sporadic disconnects from the service center, which impacts the Web Filter Service and thus my employees can not access any web pages. I have to manually login to the router, go to the Service windows and click on 'Connect' to get connected again. This is what the report page shows

01713 16Sep2008 14:53:26 Warning: Web filtering is not available, URL blocked
01712 16Sep2008 14:52:54 Disconnected from Service Center
01711 16Sep2008 14:52:54 Switching server from [208.185.174.169] to [216.228.148.24]. Reason: By Server

This never happened before, just about the last two weeks or so.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
tom

Tom,

I don't have any issues like and the only interruptions I have had in the last six months or so have been power outages at my house.

Is it possible that the outages are ISP related and nothing to do with the service? You can disable the blocking if the service center is down.

Also, where is your office? Maybe the sofaware gateway is hard to get to from your location.

If I turn Web filtering off everything's fine.
How do I know if it's a problem from my ISP? What does the message about 'switching servers' mean and where does that come from - Sofaware gateway server or else? It only says 'Reason:by server' - which server??
And as I said, I never had this happen before, only about two weeks now. So, the location of my office doesn't matter, does it?

I have also been seeing the service center disconnects, although it hasn't required any action on my part (I don't use the filtering options).

I opened a trouble ticket, and was told the problem was resolved on the 14th, but I was still seeing disconnects.

I noticed that the firmware was updated from 8.0.24x to 8.0.33x a few minutes ago. Perhaps that will help solve this problem.

Well, given Tom's feedback it looks like a Sofaware issue not an external ISP or other issue.

So far my access has been fine with 8.0.24x and web filtering on.

I have noticed a fair amount of service center disconnects, a few times the Z100G would not reconnect until the DSL box was reset. That leads me to wonder if the service center disconnects are glitches with the ISP/DSL box and not the Z100G.

I did not have to reset my DSL box. Manually reconnecting through the Z100G did the job. I also last week did a reset for the Z100G. Since then I didn't have the problems anymore. So, this looks like a problem with the router and the communication to the service center. Let's see how it goes.

I haven't had to do anything to recover, but it keeps happening. I suspect my connection stays active because I'm not using the web blocking services.

The Z100G log reports failures to connect to the service center several times a day. After it fails, it reconnects to the original (working) server, without any intervention on my part.

The wording of the disconnects makes me think that the service center itself is causing the Z100G to switch to the alternate servers. That connection fails, and the Z100G eventually returns to the working primary server.

From the log:

20Sep2008 06:34:09 Switching server from [208.185.174.169] to [216.228.148.23]. Reason: By server
20Sep2008 06:34:09 Disconnected from Service Center
20Sep2008 06:36:54 Warning: Connection to the Service Center has failed.
20Sep2008 06:36:54 Switching server from [216.228.148.23] to [208.185.174.169]. Reason: Giveup
20Sep2008 06:36:55 Successfully connected to the Service Center

Note that the first entry says that the reason the first switch occurs is "By server", implying it's a command from sofaware that causes the switch to the bad server.
