What are good performance settings for the z100g router?

I have a solid 5 meg cable connection.

However, broadband speed tests through the z100g report 900K to 2.5 meg. 2.5meg is very seldom.
Speedtests with the z100g out of the loop is around 4.8 meg.

I've asked live online help about this and their response was to turn off antivirus scanning.

What are good rules / smart defense settings etc to use to get the broadband speed over 3 meg on a 5 meg connection. I really like the router for security but the performance kills me.

Did you turn off Vstream ? Do you now receive your full bandwidth ? What settings do you have for Vstream scanning (what port's/service's)?

Performance has been better lately. Not exactly sure what I did. :-) Of 5 meg bandwidth - speedtests report 3 to 4+ meg. I can live with that.
Only issue left is the Vista machine and troublesome wireless. I suspect it's vista and the netgear dongle. The XP home and linksys adapter works well.

Check out my home network.

My 6 Mbps DSL connection speed drops by 1Mbps when I enable web filtering (4.9 Mbps vs 3.8 Mbps).

Also have you disabled IP6 in Vista... this sometimes causes problems with devices...

I have "turbo" roadrunner and get a very solid 7.5 to 8.0 Mb UNTIL I turn on "Web filtering" with web filtering on my speed drops to about 5.5Mb so this is quite a hit....
Turn off web filtering ... right back to 8.0MB

Is this typical?

I do want filtering on for the kids, is there a way to permanently exclude an IP address from web filtering? Then I could have 8Mb raw, and the kids can have 5.5 "filtered". ;-)

Thanks,
Jim

yes,
Under reports, my computer, then edit on the device you want to exclude, click single computer, check reserve a fixed ip address for this computer and also check "exclude this computer from web filtering". Try some speed tests that way and post the results.

Also, I like your network diagram!! What program did you use to do that?

With web Filtering on I have gotten up to 7M and that is all anyone should get based on the Specs of the Device. Unless I have read this incorrect MAX is 7M... I HAD a 10M turbo connection for a bit and could never reach it and looking into it further and testing with and without the Z100 I found and also read that the specs are 7M... So I backed my connection down to the default 7M with Roadrunner and all if fine...

chakotay2:

EXECELLENT - Thanks! That was not intuitive to me, but it WORKED!
Tests to two different sites in speedtest before making the change were both @ 5.7Mb after making the change both were 7.9Mb.
I tested again with filtering off at router and got the same result 7.9Mb so there does not seem to be any degredation penalty for having filtering turned off for a single device.

I don't think I have posted any network diagrams... Are you sure it was me? ;-)

Mr. Nobody:
You are a lucky man! Here in Charlotte the STANDARD connection is only 5Mb and the "turbo" is only 8Mb ... ;-)

Thanks,
Jim

Errrrrrrrrr PS:
I mean that the location of where to make the change was not intuitive to me ... I had paged thru the panels and was thinking it would be more obvious ;-)
