Hi I have never set this up before so i would be asking for opinions and suggestions...
My long term plan is to set up an internal file server, web server, and streaming media server, on my internal network.... I may or may not want clients to use VPN access (if they did use it how many could connect at once? How many different clients could connect(max)? I prob will be using 2003 Server and IIS on a dedicated server upon which i will add file and streaming media access through 3rd party vendors.... Another question i have is that if i register a domain name or subdomain like www.froghats.com and register with a free dynamic DNS service would users be able to find my Z100 Router? Would i have to use the routers Dynamic DNS address?? so if a client typed www.froghats.com and my DNS Domain name is registerd with an public IP address of 24.344.33.22 and that ip was inside my z100 router would they make it that far? Next someone told me i have to enabale local forwarding to get to the webserver, file server etc,,,to go from 24.344.33.22 to an internal IP of 192.169.1.100 etcc.... any suggestions would this be possible? How many clients to access the webpage at once given a bandwidth of 500 kb Does the router have limitations.... Also my file server has its own certificate for 443 ssl access would they have any troubles obtaining the cert to use for encrypted connection to file server (i have tested this on XP and it worked fine but i had to do a direct connection with no router involved) Any suggestions on this Thanks |

I am not doing it myself, but if you go to SECURITY --- SERVERS, then you will see the file and webserver as the first choices for automatic server setups. You will need Dynamic DNS to keep the server "alive" on the net. I don't know what protocol you are using fcr the streaming media server, but this requires you to define the port and IP in the rules. Port Forwarding is the most common term for this. Other terms are NAT, and static IP assignment (same thing BTW). So under rules you would choose
ALLOW and FORWARD: [protocol] SOURCE:ANY DESTINATION[server internal IP address] The same thing would apply for SSL at port 443 but it needs to go both ways. There used to be some quirks with IIS and certificates where the port number was displayed in the redirect URL. Don't know if that is still an issue. Clear as mud? This message has been edited. Thanks for the suggestion
This is going to be a long term project and will start off small and if it takes off build from there.... The file server 3rd party software i have has its own SSL cert no need to pay verisign $300/yr.. It also has its own log int interface, much like this forum, infact it has its own built in FTP server and forum as well.. Streaming media might take a while to set up and the number of concurrent users and bandwidth may be issues but that is long term goal I will start with the basics first and go from there I entend to have a small web page interface where users can sign up with there pay pal account and wehn i get the funds there accoutn will be created on the 3rd party file server.. The only part of 2003 server i would be using would be IIS the rest i dont think i will need to use? In fact i am also looking into virutal servers from VMare as possible add ons or alternatives not sure yet... Although my main issues are going to be in regards to the Z100g if it is capable of getting the job done, or if it comes down to it put the server outside the firewall and use the firewall for internal client access(ie myself)Alhtough this is prob not a good idea When i can get the project going i will post again if there are any more questions Regards C. |

the security | servers tab helps *A LOT* with internal servers.. Like to see more options in there but... I use it more or less to configure WHS to be seen by the computers on the network as a server..
WHS=Windows Home Server |

Could you share your Z100G configuration information? I'm trying to get WHS to work and I'm presuming I can't install the connector software because my router isn't properly set up to work with WHS. Thanks!
