Good afternoon.

I'm getting ready to purchase the Z100G for the added protection for my home network. I have a NAS connected to my network. Will I still be able to access this once I put in the Z100G? I thought I was reading somewhere that there was problems with this?

Thanks.

Hi,

Of course, ZoneAlarm Z100G has full support for NAS appliances and windows file shares.

Since ZoneAlarm is different from low end consumer wireless access points, there are some things you need to keep in mind while installing the device:

1. Unlike typical consumer access points, the Z100G firewall does not, by default, permit access from the Wireless LAN (WLAN) to the LAN; To enable access in this direction, you should create a firewall rule using the Z100G rules wizard, to allow traffic from the WLAN to the LAN.

2. When mapping the network drive, you must use its IP address, and not its name (unless you have a Microsoft WINS server).

Since we are getting feedback that some customers are confused about these points, in a week or so we are releasing a new software upgrade for all ZoneAlarm Z100G users that will enable "bridge mode". This will allow the WLAN-LAN connection to appear completely "transparent" for customers who prefer this.

Just to keep from having to make an assumption here.....,
-
I purchased the Z100G Router back on February 16, 2007. Like the others, I to can't use it because it does not allow my wireless computers to communicate with my wired computers and network storage hard drive.
-
Since I can't use the Z100G router I had to disconnect it and reconnect my original router in order to use my internet connection.
-
Since the router is not connected it will not be able to receive the upgrade automatically so I need to know will the upgrade be available for download from your web site?
-
If it will be available for download from your web site then I will just keep checking the site for the upgrade.
-
If it will only be available via automatic download, how will I know when to reconnect the Z100 router in order to load the upgrade?
-
Thanks for your time and help, it is appreciated.

For those of you using a Windows desktop and prefer to use device names rather than IP addresses to reference other computers/printers/etc., you can modify the HOSTS file on one computer, then copy it around to all the others. This is like a "poor mans WINS server". The HOSTS file is found at :

\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

The file has a couple lines of documentation in it, and don't be afraid of screwing it up, as it is pretty simple to use.

I don't recall where it is found on a LINUX box, but it also exists there.

Hope that helps,
Jeff N.

Jeff, you are absolutely correct.
And in Linux this file is located in /etc/hosts.
