Hello,
I am looking for steps to safely configure the Z100G to allow access to Real VNC server. The PC with VNC Server is running WinXP and plugged into the Z100G. I need to access it remotely from a PowerMac using the Mac version of the VNC Viewer. I had no problem doing this with the ZoneAlarm Security Suite, but I'm unfamiliar with the Z100G interface. No easy list of applications to "allow". Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you! Tim |

I will give you the answer, but I will say that I don't know of a way to "safely" secure RealVNC unless you are using the Enterprise version on both ends. The free edition has some unusual shortcomings in the security area that are not recommended for internet access.
The best way to do it would be to set up a VPN tunnel and use it that way so you don't have to poke a hole in your firewall, but I have not set up a VPN to the Z100G with a Mac. Not sure what options would be available. However, if you insist on doing it straight through, then make sure you have a very solid password in RealVNC. (Note that the free version of RealVNC Server will only authenticate on the first eight characters of a password, so even if you create a longer password, it will let you in with the first eight characters). I also recommend changing the port assignments in RealVNC to something other than 5900 and 5800. Here are the steps: 1. Log into router and select the SECURITY menu link on the left. 2. Click on the RULES tab at the top. 3. On the RULES screen, Click on the button labeled "ADD RULE" 4. Select "Allow and forward..." and click NEXT 5. Click the button "Custom Service" and enter: Protocol : ANY Port Range: 5800 - 5900 Then click NEXT. 6. Select the following: The connection source is: WAN And the destination is: [select the computer running RealVNC server]. I hope this helps and please be careful. the rocket |
