Hi, I've had my z100g for a couple of weeks now and so far it's not impressing me. The wireless signal is very weak compared to the Linksys router I have and the speed to the internet has been cut in half. I expected a little speed decrease because it's checking for viruses etc, but half? Does anyone have suggestions to fix these two problems? Do I possibly have something set up wrong? I can't use it the way it is so if this is as good as it gets, I guess I'll have to send it back. Thanks!
Thanks for the reply. I just got it a couple of weeks ago and it's running 7.5.55x so I guess I have to upgrade it. I understood it would automatically upgrade although I didn't know how it was going to upgrade the firmware automatically. I'll have to see if I can find an upgrade and try that.
I just chatted with support. I have the latest firmware and the new firmware will be pushed but it's not being pushed out yet. No ETA when it will be pushed.
The person I chatted with didn't have any suggestions to fix the problems. He even looked at the router settings remotely. So hopefully someone here will have more suggestions. Otherwise I'll have to go back to my Linksys.
Sorry to hear you are having problems. You are correct that the level of filtering by the Z100 does hit you somewhat. 50% is quite a bit of an overkill though.
Couple things: 1. How are you measuring the speed difference between the two devices?
Also, the signal issue may be just toying with the antenna position more. I had a Linksys WRT54G and the Z100G is much more powerful in my situation; 4-5 bars versus 1 or 2 across the house and up one floor.
The Z100G is really not going to impress you in performance and glitz. Its designed to be a more robust security appliance for SOHO situations. It's value lies in what you don't see.
Lastly, I am running the 8.24x BETA firmware and the performance is much better. I still see a few glitches with web filtering that have to be manually overridden, but other than that its performing well. Sign up for the BETA program on this forum and see if you get some substantial improvements.
Hi TR, I'm just using various speed tests on the internet such as dslreports.com or bandwidthplace.com etc. If I disconnect my z100g and plug in my Linksys, I get close to the 10Mbps I should get. When I plug the z100g back in, I get around 3Mbps. I've done it several times and always get much faster speeds with the Linksys. As mentioned, I expected a bit of a speed decrease and was OK with that. But this seems odd that it would drop this much. As for the wireless signal strength, I've tried moving the antennas, moving the router, checking/changing settings but overall I get 1 or 2 bars compared to the 5 (maximum) I used to get with the Linksys. And the Linksys I could set the thing on the floor and the antennas could be pointed any which way and it didn't seem to matter. I always got the 5 bars. I wanted the security and was willing to pay for that with a little performance hit to get it, so performance and glitz wasn't the top priority. As much as I like the features of the z100g, I can't take a hit on the speed like that. I think I probably might have something set wrong somewhere. Otherwise this forum would be full of complaints about the speed. I'll see if I can find that beta program and maybe give that a try and keep looking through the settings too. Thanks!
An upgrade to 8.24 will fix your problem. I had the same thing happen to me with the old firmware. It dropped my speed by 50%. As soon as I got the early version of 8.24 the problem was completly fixed.
Well that's encouraging. Thanks ConfusedX2. I've read posts on this board saying version 8x caused problems. I'll have to try it and see if it helps. Thanks for the post!
Go direct to tech support, either by web or phone Sofaware Tech Support. There are options that they have to help you with troubleshooting and firmware updates.
No. The Z100G is sold with a managed services subscription to update the software and firmware. The downside is they control the updates; the upside is they are responsible for keeping your system operational and your firewall updated.
I received the router two weeks ago. Worst purchase ever. Didn't work, tried to contact tech support they weren't there. Tried again refused unless registered, tried to register never received reply. There appears to be no listed # for sofaware. Called Check Point they are no help.
I've had none of those problems so no, I don't think you're caught in a scam. The problems I have are listed above. I contacted Tech support via their live chat and he was as helpful as he could be remotely.
