I have an odd problem that I suspect is not caused by the z100g, but resetting the z100g clears it up. It happens several times a week, as many as 2 or 3 times on a bad day.
One wireless client on my home network experiences occasional severe slowdowns in speed (normally, according to dslreports.com, I get more than 12mbps, when the problem is happening I either get 200k or less, or the test simply times out). It's so bad that even loading the z100g admin pages can take minutes per page. Other wireless nodes on the network do not seem to be affected. When the problem happens, I log into the z100g admin client --> network --> wlan, then change a setting, change it back, hit "apply". Immediately (like within 2 seconds) I can see download speeds jump from 20Kbps to over 1Mbps. Since this isn't affecting other clients, i suspect something to do with Windows. Whether I'm booted into Vista Home Premium 32 or W7 64 build 7100, I have this problem. I'm guessing that the router reset unf---s something in Windows. Any ideas what might be causing it? I'm no networking whiz but I've been checking up on the logs and I don't see any evidence of someone stealing/piggybacking. InSSIDer shows decent channel separation (I moved to ch3, nearest "neighbor" is on ch6). Signal strenht doesnt seem to be affected. |

My first inclination is to see what is common in all the configurations and its the wireless card on the pc. Not only do other PCs seen to be OK with the router, the two different operating systems on the affected PC didn't make any difference.
Something that might be easy to try is to update the hardware drivers for the Wi-Fi card. Also, you could check to see if one of the Windows Updates updated the wifi driver and if so then roll it back to the previous version. This is what I had to do on a LAN card last year. I really doubt it to be anything on the router side, and unless that one Network Object is configured differently from the rest (only one to have web content filtering, being used as a server of some sort, or having the VPN client installed and running), there is nothing to cause the router to treat it differently. Two other things:
Again, I am fishing, but these are things I would be investigating. the rocket |

And thanks for fishing :)
It's a dual-boot setup, plain vanilla as such things go. Vista is on one physical drive, W7 on the other. Something I just realized in thinking about the test I ran in Vista... the problem persists through reboot. I think (not 100% sure) that it persisted through a cold boot with a minute or longer wait before powering back on. I hadn't really put 2 and 2 together until just now because at the time I did that test (months ago), I thought it was interference from other networks. 2 different OS, rebooting and even cold booting should pretty much localize the problem to the wireless card. I'll do what I can with driver fiddling, but probably will buy a new wireless card or USB dongle. Thanks for the ideas & info. I'll check back, and will update if I learn and/or fix anythign. |
