I just bought a Canon MX700 all-in-one printer
Very nice ... To get it working for Wireless computers I set up two new security rules: Allow WLAN to <printer IP>:Any Service and Allow <printer IP> to WLAN:Any Service So far so good... but .........it also has a built-in memory card reader that us supposed to be accessible as a mapped drive on the network. This feature works fine when the laptop is attached to the WIRED network, but does NOT work when the laptop is linked via wireless. The exact error message is: An error occurred while reconnecting Z: to \\<mac address>\cannon_memory Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use. This connection has not been restored. There is no change in behavior if firewall on laptop is disabled (which is not surprising since it works OK with firewall enabled on wired connection). What is strange is that NO errors are recorded in the event log on the Z100G router. Any help appreciated! Thanks, Jim |

You won't see any errors in the router because it is a Windows Security issue, not a network issue.
When you map a drive, details of the connection, including the IP address are captured. When you use an alternate connection method, Windows sees this as a different connection and since the mapping is already established through the wired connection, it will not let you establish it again. If you delete the map from the laptop then re-map it using a wireless connection, it should work. However you can't go back and forth. the rocket |

Thank you TXRocket!
I was very proud of myself for getting the port passthru set up and started hitting the eggnog ;-) When I did that I should have stopped dinking with the computers and gone downstairs to watch "Christmas Vacation" on the TV ;-) So after reading your note I figured hey the Cannon software mapped the card reader as Z-drive on the wired network I'll just create a duplicate map to Y-Drive while connected via the WIRELESS network and then I can have my cake and eat it too.... Interestingly when I tried to map y-drive to \\<mac address>\cannon_memory as worked with Z-drive it still failed but with different error: the network path could not be found ... So I'm thinking well maybe I have to open up ports 137 / 138 /139 but again nothing is recorded in the Z100G log related to the failure to map......... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm I had given the printer a static IP address when I set it up so I changed the map to read: \\<IP Addr>\cannon_memory and now it works ... I like using the IP address better anyway ... I guess Canon defaults to MAC as they are trying to work around the DHCP IP address of the printer changing (which would be the default config....) So I think I'm good to go! THANKS for the help - you got me on the road to recovery! Jim |

Great to hear. That's why these community forums work. We can all contribute to solve a problem.
Now, lay off the egg nog and get back to "Christmas Vacation!" Merry Christmas! the rocket |
