Ok i just installed the new z100g Router and all drivers and firm ware are updated. I used the default settings (WPA) and my xbox 360 could not even see it. The SSID is broadcasted. I had to switch to WEP and it finally see's it. Anyone one know why this happens. Also I noticed on the xbox 360 when i made sure all the settings were working and it checked the xbox live it found it ok but the NAT stated it was strict. Anyone know how to make this open instead. It doesn't cause lag but it has caused probelms with locating friends and allowing me to chat with them using voice....I am tempted to send the darn router back and stick with my linksys at least it worked....

Hi,

As per our chat today please make sure (I don't have an Xbox 360 to tinker with) that it's set to the B/G freq. range and if it doesn't support WPA then make sure it's set to WEP (and accordingly also the appliance).

I think there may be some ports that need to be opened for the Xbox 360.. Dont know which ones myself cuz it complained to me about a Strict Nat as well... Erez.. if your in the US.. You know I wouldnt mind lending you my 360.....
;)

Though I have one hint.. The 360 is also considered a Windows MCE (Media Center Extender).. The tech notes on that might also give you a hint to what is going on with it..

I saw this issue before with the xbox 360 and WPA - check to make sure you have wpa set with TKIP and not AES encryption as the xbox only supports tkip (that is the M$ branded wireless NIC)

Also, I am certain that it does not support wpa2, only wpa...

Erez.. Im trying to get some information from Xbox 360 support on what ports are required to have it stop complaining about a strict NAT..
At some point Sofa may want to establish a request formally on the requirements to allow a 360' to pass through the firewall without issues.. This is another issue that will come back to haunt you.

I added the following rules to the Sofaware box but it didnt seem to make any difference getting it to flip from Strict NAT to something else.... which means you will have problems hosting games

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908874

1 [Move Up] [Move Down] Allow and Forward WAN (Internet) Xbox360 (Network Object):88 (UDP)
2 [Move Up] [Move Down] Allow and Forward WAN (Internet) Xbox360 (Network Object):3074 (UDP)
3 [Move Up] [Move Down] Allow and Forward WAN (Internet) Xbox360 (Network Object):3074 (TCP)

For windows MCExtender to connect to a PC running Media Center (Xbox 360 is also an MCExtender)

Ok i found some info on the strict NAT on the web. MS had some info out there for router manufacturers.

here is the link:
MS DOC

also here is another good link where the guy explains it a little more clearly.

Russ's blog

now from the russ blog site he states.

Microsoft have decided to separate NAT types into three classes Open, Moderate and Strict. Here's what each of them means:
Strict: You have a symmetric NAT.
Moderate: You have a cone shaped NAT with port filtering or with UPnP turned off.
Open: You have a cone shaped NAT with no port filtering or with UPnP turned on.

Does anyone know how to change the NAT shape?

the site suggests creating a rule, "that tells the NAT that it should only translate the IP address from connections from my Xbox and leave the port as it is."

Does anyone know how to do this?

thanks,

I have spoken with technical support and they are aware of this issue. The person I communicated with said: "I can say that it is in progress but not yet resolved"

I'm performing a sniffer on my communications to/from XBOX Live and will send the results to their support team. Hopefully, this additional information will shed some light to what is happening.

Personally, from what I have researched it seems that the internal port number is not staying static during NAT. I will probably write a quick application to test this theory. I'll send it to a server that I'll host at my office and send packets from my home system to see if the source port is changing. I'll perform the testwith the z100g and without it.

I created this Discussion for a temporary solution until Support gets a fix for the XBOX 360 NAT issue:

Id sniff a bit more but i tend to run out of buffer in the Sofaware sniffer. One thing i did notice was the ICMP traffic, even with the ICMP service enabled on the Sofa... If yah need any info, just ask. ;)
