Ok ... so my new iPhone will show up shortly ...
Due to apple being a bit "controlling" in terms of how they let 3rd parties write software, the 3rd parties are forced to "sync" their applications back to a desktop over Wi-Fi. Has anybody figured out what has to be opened up to allow this to happen ... assuming there are "standards" in play here ;-) Might it be possible to allow an exception on a MAC basis? Thanks! |

Not sure I quite understand the question - On the config page of the z100 Choose Network / MY_Network / Edit WLAN / Try bridging the the Wireless lan and the wired LAN Show advanced settings and you can restrict by MAC Address. Could take some playing around but it should work. I have TIVO's, Slingboxes, and wireless laptops. I can get to where I need to go. I wished I had an Iphone. Does anyone know if you can ping to or from an Iphone? |

Sorry not to be clear...
The cell phone I have now is a 1999 (Handspring Prism with "plug-in" Sprint cell phone springboard) model so ... yeah I wasn't quite thinking clearly ;-) Right now I have some simple rules set up to allow access from the Wireless LAN to the IP addresses of my hard-wired network attached printers for ports 515 & 161 which is what print traffic rides, otherwise the WLAN is blocked from the wired LAN as is the default. I'd like to keep it as close to that config. as possible for security while opening up the minimal number of ports needed for the iPhone to be able to "sync" back to my hard-wired home computer. Bridging and restricting the "bridge" to just the MAC of the iPhone should work, or maybe add a rule under Security --> Rules to allow all services to & from <MAC of iPhone> with <MAC of desktop uni> in that case I guess the WLAN vs. LAN is made irrelevant? Either approach leaves me open to MAC spoofing but small risk... I guess I could further filter by the ports that end up being used... It is a crying shame not to be able to just do everything thru the USB port... sigh....... THANKS for the suggestions! Jim |
