I tried my computer with a Linksys router and then with the Z100G and found that my bandwidth was much slower with this router. I am scanning ALL traffic not just email traffic.
The Vstream antivirus scan's in a proprietary real-time method and does not cache any packets. If you scan all ports and services from any source to any destination then it may have an effect on the appliance performance depending on the traffic density, it is advised to have more specific scanning rules.
You really arent gaining much by doing this.. Vstream is not a substitute for a virus scanner.. but an extra-layer of protection.. Dont scan ALL traffic... thats what AV/Firewall software is for.
I'm really confused by this comment "Dont scan ALL traffic... thats what AV/Firewall software is for."
yes, I want to have AV on my computer and have this as an additional layer, but this comment almost sounds like it is not effective AV. I really don't care about POP3/SMTP because I use yahoo mail. AV scan on HTTP traffic really the only reason why I want to buy this router.
What are you experiences with AV scan on HTTP port? And how good/bad AV this is? How effective is the AV on compressed archives?
I'm willing to spend even more $$$, are $400 range CheckPoint Routers better AV/FIREWALL solution for home?
VStream, the website scanning and the smart defense really slow down your connection on this box. With a regular $50 router on my cable modem (I have business class service) I got 30 down 10 up. With the VStream AV and the smart defense enabled I get about 8 down and 4.5 up.
I noticed a huge decrease in speed when I enabled my A/V and A/S. I did try enabling the A/V on port 80 and 21. I tested by downloading the eicar file and it was not blocked or logged. I have not tried emailing the eicar file to test the email scanning, I just disabled completely and use a layered defense on my workstations.
