I would like to know if there is any research being done to add WebCam support for the USB ports on the Z100G.
Having this functionality (like the Asus WL-500W whih allows remote viewing, home surveillance, etc) would make this router even more of a homerun product! Please let us Z100G fans know. Thanks and keep up the great work. This message has been edited. Last edited by: blankoboy, |

While this would be a cool feature, I would prefer we focus on the things that only Sofaware can help with such as whitelisting and blacklisting of web content.
You can buy all kinds of cameras to attach to your network for monitoring. Having it as a feature of the router is not necessary and would just add to the cost, complexity, and bugs, and slow down the firmware update processes even more. As for the USB ports, NAS is a better feature for the masses. the rocket |

Hi,
We will research the possibility of adding this in a future firmware update. Regarding whitelisting and blacklisting of web content, this is coming. The SofaWare Team |

That's great news! Adding generic webcam support would be a fantastic feature! If Asus can have this functionality on their WL-500W I don't see why the Z100G can't
It would be very beneficial for those who don't keep their PC's on 24/7. Thanks. |

Hey again. Just curious to see if there has been any progress made with possibly adding webcam functionality to the Z100G? Thanks.

Having a webcam on a Router is a waste...
There are already network attaachable cameras... I think NAS or log storage via USB makes more sense... And i entirely agree with Texas Rocket... seeing some white/blacklisting of web content is a much more useful feature.. |

I don't see how having this feature can be considered as a "waste". This thread is not meant to be a "this feature is more important that that feature".
If you are going to take that tach, one could easily come back with..."there are already NAS devices" (I have 2 of them). Sure there are specialized, and expensive, LAN attachable webcams but simply adding this functionality to the firmware of a router you already own (with 2 unused USB ports) would seem like much less of a "waste" than having to shell out big bucks for a LAN connectable webcam. That said, sever other vendors (ASUS, PCI, etc) have similar home routers with both NAS and Webcam functionality. They deemed these features worthy and so do their customers. |

The "waste" part is debatable only because there are many webcams out there that can function wirelessly whereas a true NAS system can be expensive unless you want to go to old technology. Wireless is too slow and insecure for my tastes.
However, with a little server functionality, ala print servers, you could purchase a plethora of USB 2.0 external drives and do something much more useful for the users (backing up your files). Not that webcams aren't a useful feature for some folks, but I have not come across any user that doesn't need an easy to use, centralized backup system. I have come across many that wished they had the hindsight to do so, myself included. Now for the white listing and blacklisting, while that is being worked on, I would venture to say that I would pay extra for a very robust version. The other appliances that do this are hardly worth a hoot. the rocket |

Yes and these are not prosumer devices.. Actually I think being able to NAS is more important than seeing a webcam.. plus that also means they will have to have drivers that support x brand webcams.. if you need this feature so much, why dont you go back to using the poorly insecure routers that have it? And regarding NAS... they are rather expensive for a decent device (ReadyNas) and tend to grab excessive amounts of IP addresses (Netgear anyone, someone mentioned a device that grabbed 6! IP addresses for use..).... To me thats more value added than a novelty.. you can always hook a webcam to a host on the network and stream it...And psst.. I have only one free USB port cuz guess what.. its a print server ... there are times it does not make sense to attach an external disk.. esp if you want it seen by multiple machines due to the configuration hassles...
